In my pursuit of dining opportunities, I found myself in a dining commons in the local underground market. It's very easy to feel out of place in joints like this, but I managed to stick around long enough to find a cheap, decent meal. It's probably the closest I've found to the sort of food one can find in an American take-out restaurant (only better, because it's 'authentic'*).

A scant 5 RMB (less than a dollar) gets you a contained full to overflowing with steamed rice and another with whatever you want. This one contained peppers, spicy strips of beef and assorted greens. Not bad, says I.
*Heavy sarcasm. One day, I'll need to share my thoughts on the American obsession with 'authenticity.' The short answer: A lot of it is BS.
